I'm still thinking about this one. Moving this post on down.

There are so many different types, but the one that is most commonly grown is citrinus. It is often grown as a hedge and kept sheared to under 6 feet. It has bright red large flowers, and can grow up to 15 feet- I have never seen it absolutely huge, though. Viminalis is a tender one, it grows into a gorgeous weeping tree. 'Little John' stays small and has smaller dark red flowers. I think citrinus would grow in your area- it can take temps down to about 10 degrees.

Thanks Renee. I went back by there today and asked her if she could get the species name for it. She called and will let me know when she gets an answer. It's just not something you see around here. In fact, it's the first one I've ever seen here. I'm hoping it's one that will work for me. The flowers on these are what I would call a dusty red/pink.

Hi I have 3 planted and plan to plant 50 more. I paid $4.99 each and bought them from a wonderful e-bay seller by the name of Donovan. He sells more than one type and is very knowledgeable. I have bought several from him as well as tons of other things and everything arrives healthy and thrives. But they are starter plants about 6-12" tall. The hummers and butterflies adore them. I do know that there are all kinds just as Renee said.

gardenofeden, Thank you so much. I'll check him out. That price is WAY lower than what they're asking here and also I know I'll get the right one. You and I are in the same zone, but I know having moved here from the same zone on the east coast gardening conditions can be very different.

Rena, I haven't bought one yet, but found a nursery one town over that has nice size 'Little John' in gallon pots for $10 and since I only need 1 I plan on just buying it there. I'm just waiting to know where I want to plant it.
