Garden Update

The roofers are here. They drove through part of my garden bed and smashed three plants, one of which I moved afterward. The other two may still make it. I put huge cement chunks in the track they made before they got here on the third day. They parked on the street today! All those bags and pots are now planted. I'll have to take a pic of another bed I finished yesterday.

I finished planting the west side of my house a few days ago. There are White and Yellow Oriental Lilies under the windows and Hollyhocks between them. I saved a little space for something? else in front of them. Next out from them are the Daylilies. Each Daylily is a different color. In front of them I planted dark purple Wave Petunias. Along the edging I sprinkled Alyssum seed. At the corner there is a Nearly Wild Rose and two Limelight Hydrangea standards with a Wave planted between them and then a now smashed daylily. At the far corner there is a wild grape vive that came with the house and I need something there for height so I left it for now. Beyond the grape there is a Dwarf Korean Lilac and a Peony. Around the corner I started zinnia seeds since I don't have much for a shade bed yet. The roofers have their trailer parked on top of the zinna seeds so I can't get them to keep them watered. Arrrgh!

I've gotten this far on our veggie bed. The peas are planted around the upside down tomato cages, which I wired the legs together on to make little towers for them to climb. then I staked the cages so that they won't blow over (or away). Behind them I have Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Bell Peppers, Early and Late Cabbage, and eight Tomato plants. Today I planted four rows of carrots but that's all I could do today. (Not my kid)

All that I have purchased from the nursery this year are veggies. I'm so good ;)

You have been one very busy lady. It's really looking good though and I bet your plants will end up being fine that we're run over.

Memo, that looks great. That bed is going to be beautiful when it's all filled in and blooming. What are the dimentions of your veggie area? Do you have any problems with the grass creeping in. I've been mulling over a veggie garden oh for about 8 years and never get past doing pots on my deck! I like the size of yours.

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with roofers. Any time workers are around it's nerve-wracking as to if they'll pay any attention whatsoever to a garden. I hope you don't run into any further issues with damage. It is amazing though how plants spring back after what seems like life-threatening damage!

Looks like the flowers are ready for the mulch. Going to look great
    when your done.

Wow, you have been good! I went to the grocery store yesterday (to buy food) and thanks to all of Rita's photos, I could not resist buying these gorgeous lupines they had for $6.99. Argh. I am so weak!

I can TOTALLY relate to the roofer frustration. I had a roofer here yesterday and again today putting a new roof on my building near my potager. Before he started, we had a laughing conversation where I light-heartedly told him stories of my last roofer who massacred azaleas and various other plants last year. He acted appalled and promised not to do the same. He said he'd keep all of his equipment and stuff behind my fence (a garden safe zone for the time being). More than 2/3rds of the building is behind the fence, so he has plenty of access from that side of the fence.

So what does he do? First thing when he showed up yesterday, he walked inside the fence with a tarp to scout a location to throw all of the old roofing trash near my newly built and planted potager. I quickly shooed him out. It's amazing how little consideration they give our garden efforts! I thought this guy and I had it all on the table--but apparently not!

    Anyway, I feel your pain!

    Memo,

It is looking fabulous! If the daylily doesn't make it (and it probably will) let me know what color it is and I'll replace it. I've got about any color you want, and I am going to have to divide this year. Mine have just started blooming.

Your plan is great! It is going to be so pretty! The zinnia seeds will probably just sit there until the work is done. and you can water them.

I love your veggie garden too. That is such a nice size.

Thanks for pictures. I love to see what everyone is doing, and "borrow" an idea or two.

Roofers should be shot on completion of job. When DH was working on the siding, he managed to kill all 25 red lilies I had at that time.

Chohio, Thank you. I think the plants will survive since they can't keep running over them again and again.

Thyme, I believe the veggie garden is around 12' or 14'x35'. It's one of the smallest gardens I have had over the years but it's just my youngest daughter and I now so there is plenty of room to grow what we can eat. I'll be canning this year, haven't done that in a couple of years now. It really helps during winter so that we just have to buy staples and meat. I have some cattle so I may have one calf butchered this fall and that will really help out. Wish I could raise chickens in town! As for the roofers, there was a problem with the quality of their work and had to tell them to rip some of the shingles back off and correct their poor work. I imagine they are pretty mad at me now. I came home yesterday to them having cut off a big branch of one of the maple trees and they dumped the whole thing on top of the dwarf lilac and the peony. I had to clean that mess up myself. So far today they haven't shown up. One whole side of my roof is open and we are to have big storms today and rain for the next week. Oh boy!!!

Linda, yes mulch is next, right after I finish planting the veggies.

Lisa, it's been a challenge to stay out of the greenhouse across the street from me, let me tell you! All day long when I'm outside doing my gardening thing, I'm watching car after car pull up over there, go in and then come carrying out plants, trees and shrubs. I am determined though to move all of my plants here before I buy another thing. I'm almost out of room and half my plants are still back at the ranch. I think I may have to have some more space tilled out in the lawn or something. Do you suppose I can let my melons vine through a Daylily bed? LOL! Sorry to hear you are going through roofer woes as well. It is so frustrating!

Kay, thank you for the compliment and the offer to replace the daylily. I do have plenty of daylilys and have been giving away 5-10 for every fan I have replanted. My cousin next door is going to have a lovely garden this year too. Prior to me moving in...she only had iris ;). I love enabling those who would like to garden but don't really know where to start. She's busy over there digging and replanting all of her little beds and is going to have to expand some of them to make room for all of my cast-offs. LOL! 25 lilies...ugh!

I don't know if there is any roofing company that is not a disaster to the garden. It's like they take a crash course in how to cause damage. In spite of that setback, things are looking very good. You sure have made so much progress. For no gardenbeds even to ones fill of plants and will be flowers. Great job.

I see the newly planted daylilies and the lilies behind them but I don't see the hollyhocks. I never thought of the pairing of lilies and hollyhocks, great idea.

It looks to me like you have plenty of room left in the veggie garden. What else are you going to plant? I used to plant beets, onions and lettuce as well as most of the things you have already planted. Plus pole beans. I love fresh stringbeans plus they freese well for the winter. Also my favorite herb dill and cucumbers to go with tomatoes to make a nice salad.

Thanks, Rita, for the compliment. It is a lot done in a short period of time, if I say so myself. I just moved here the second week in March. Nine weeks, wow! The hollyhocks that I moved were just the seedlings that came up this spring. They are between the lilies, between the windows. Not really big enough to be seen in the picture I guess. I left the giant ones at the ranch since this is their third year. I didn't want to move them and then have this be their last summer. A few of the baby hollyhocks are doing okay but the rest have fried leaves and green stems since I haven't been able to get the mulch on quick enough. They are in southern and western sun all afternoon and evening. I'll probably just plant some seeds in there in case they don't make a come back. I am working on mulching today since the roofers didn't show up again.

In my veggie garden I still have to plant, bush beans, dill, cucumbers, watermelon and cantaloupe, crook neck squash, some chard and a few chives. I might plant some cilantro in the shady holding bed on the east side of the house. That's about it. Had planned on growing sweet potatoes but didn't get the garden tilled early enough. The sandy soil here is perfect for root crops.

You sure have acomplished a record breaking about of work for the short period of time you have been there. Plus I know all the work needed can't be outside. An old house has got to need lots of attention inside as well as out.

MeMo, everything is coming along so nicely. You have been hard at work. Congratulations on a job very well done.

    Thank you, Carrie.

Rita, believe it or not the inside is very very nice. The only changes I'd like to make are to add more counters and cabinets in the kitchen and replace the counter tops. In the bathroom I'd like to tile the shower and add bead board to the rest of the walls. But in reality there is nothing wrong with those things, they are completely adequate and look fine. The house mainly needs aesthetic attention to the outside now that the roof is getting done. Insulation will be put in this summer sometime and I hope to have it painted this fall if I can save up enough pennies for that. I have lots of plans for the yard but that will be an ongoing project as you well know. I have lots and lots of space to work with out there.

Good, that means you can just spend more of your time and resources getting the garden done.

Gosh, you are scaring me about roofers! We have a buddy who's a roofer - I really hope that when it comes time to replace our roof, he is more careful of my garden!

And, yes, you have been busy!!! I love that you are enabling your cousin!
