I was walking the garden tonight and noticed some buds on my Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' that looked extra resiny. After poking around a little I found a crawler inside. There's a hole in the bud where it was feeding. Only about 10 buds affected. Must have been eggs on the plant when I got it last fall that are now in the larvae stage? Or maybe a local pest that will return next year?
Are the affected buds done for or will they continue to develop? It's otherwise healthy and vigorous. The terminal bud was chewed on..
Systemic (bayer) to treat?
I'm curious what large growers do to combat these problems. Excluding my arb hedge I only have 15 conifers, hardly a huge draw for local pests. Can't imagine those with expansive collections. Do a lot of people quarantine new plants for the first year?
Thanks for any advise, experiences, or confirmation on ID.
