Marcia, a few years back I did manage to root a hibiscus cutting. I used rooting hormone, stuck it in a pot of soil and put a plastic bag over it. I believe I put it in a dark room as well, as I had heard somewhere about this working for whatever reason. It took a long time to root, I think maybe even 6 to 8 weeks, but it did take. I tried a couple times again after that with no success, so I just chalked it up to beginners luck!lol Give it a try anyway, you don't have anything to lose.

I have to do something with it. One shoot is about three feet long! LOL It's the one that's blooming, of course.

I've got one overwintering, too, Marcia. Mine is also really gangly. I was thinking of cutting it back and seeing what it does. The root system must be pretty good because it sent up or shoots where there was only 1 before. Has anyone else ever overwintered them and what did you do?

I made the mistake of giving it, and my Mandevilla, a 1/4 strength solution of chelated iron a week or so before I was going to bring them in. The Mandevilla died within hours (honestly) and the Hibiscus didn't look like it was doing too well, either. I won't be doing that again. But, it started to sprout from below the soil line, so I brought it in. Within weeks it was sprouting all the other sprouts, too. Now, it is really spindly, though. It needs helllpppp!!!

The mother plant is blooming right now! LOL

It ended up that i took several cuttings from the plant and most of them successfully rooted. I gave some away at Hort. meetings but i have four of them left. They're in 4" pots, around 4' tall. Anyone interested? Email me. :)
