Surprising success stories!

Hi everyone,

It would be nice if we could find here a description of success stories that should not be possible, and the conditions that may have helped the plant(s) to survive in our colder climates.

I am sure many of us wish they could plant more plants from the less cold zones. The more I read and experience things though the more I realize that Canadian zones will have to be redone eventually, for zone 3 perennials, shrubes and trees do very well everywhere in my zone 2b area, without any additionnal protection.

Hi Kit, welcome to the FN forum!

I pretty well stick close to the zone ratings when it comes to trees and shrubs. I live on a acreage and I pretty well don't have any microclimates in my garden. However, with perennials I'll always experimenting and zone pushing.

What trees and shrubs have you had success with?

Zone ratings should be used as a guideline not as a absolute rule ;)

Planting tender perennials or roses up against the foundation will keep their roots warmer during the bitterly cold temperatures of winter. I've had success with buddleia, hibiscus moscheutos, climbing monkshood and lilies that are on the tender side ... just don't plant lilies too close to the house, they'll come up very early and be frozen off ...
