Thanks Sharon, I'll shovel more snow on when what is there melts. It's my first year doing this and I'm a little nervous. If it works, great I'll be doing lots more next year. If it doesn't I'll be disappointed as that means I'll have to buy all new Aquilegia seeds again as I WS all of them.

I noticed when I picked up milk the other day that 2L now comes in a jug instead of a carton. That's better than pop bottles as I can't recycle milk jugs here plus than I get my deposit back on pop bottles. (What can I say, I'm cheap.)

Sprouts!! I have sprouts!!

I have about 200 containers outside, and have been holding my breath that this Winter Sowing thing would work. I haven't been peeking at them except to glance into the bottles that I can easily see into, but yesterday, I found a sprout here and there in a few containers. I can't even remember what they were except for one hollyhock. Now that we're expecting temps to be above freezing this week I'll be checking more often and reporting my findings.

Congratulations! I never got any until the middle of April last year - have to start checking the containers in earnest now!

Wow that is early Kristal, my first sprouts last year were April 4th....won't be long now ;)

Congratulations on the sprouts, Sharon! I've been checking my containers too, but nothing yet. I figure a couple of weeks - Easter sprouts!

I checked some more of the containers today and found rootlets beginning in some Scarlet Flax and some Asclepias! :) So, almost sprouts!

I just came in form hauling out some of the containers I used last year for WSing. Some of them still have soil in them and are still frozen so I was thinking of just letting them thaw a bit so I can rough up the top bit of soil, pour boiling watr over them to kill any weed seeds that most likely are in there and then just put a layer of fresh soil, sow my seeds cover and throw them back outside. Lazy woman's WSing...LOL!
Hopefully it will work!

The grade 1 and 2 gardeners at the school did some winter sowing today - 10 containers altogether. For seeds, they just about all chose scarlet flax, and the rest were spread out among sunflowers, bachelor buttons, marigolds and a wild flower mix. These will make for some interesting containers when they sprout! LOL

I did 23 more containers today -- mostly repeats of what I've done before because I'm doing a bunch for one of my friends.

All those Califoria poppies should put on a beautiful display. I have some orange ones from about 5 or 6 years ago that reseed every year. They're gorgeous and I just pull out the ones that grow in the grass and other places I don't want them to. They are quite the vigorous reseeders, but it's easy to pull them out.

You know, Marcia, you've really got me thinking. I've had my thunbergia and canary vine soaking for the last couple of days. I've also got cypress vine, 4 types of morning glories and moonflower to do. I've planted both mina lobata and cup an saucer vine into 20" pots with tomato cages already. They are doing wonderfully. I really don't want to battle any more vines in the greenhouse - it's just too small. Maybe I should just throw all of the other ones into 10" pots and put them out, too. Then transplant the whole pot into the ground when the time comes.

I ended up buying a few more packs of seeds today. My favourite $-Store had new seeds on the rack that weren't there before, so ofcourse they jumped into my basket! LOL So, in other words I did a few more containers today.
