How to eat a fig?

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but, when eating a fig do you eat the outside skin or do you cut it down the middle and scoop it out?

I like to stand out in the yard in the sunshine and eat off the tree (whole fig).

It's a good question. If figs aren't completely ripe the skin can contain an irritating compound. Many of my relatives peel their figs - it's what they were taught to do. I eat the whole thing after making sure it is totally ripe. A lot of a fig's flavor can be in the skin.

Been eating figs my whole life (Kadota, Black Mission, Brown Turkey, etc.) while standing next to the tree where I picked them. If they're fully ripe, no need to peel. If they're not fully ripe, why would you be eating them?

I never ate a home-grown fig. Last year I started growing and they dropped every fig they had :(
I eat from dried figs and I eat every bit even the wooden stem XD
