For full sun petunias or soapwort (haha right Marcia?) or nasturtiums, or any of those basket stuffer annuals like million bells or brachycome or bidens. Vinca looks nice but it can be invasive. If it's part shade my favourite is lobelia. Lamium is nice too if you patrol it carefully.

Thanks for the suggestions! I had lobelia out in another bed in full sun last year and it didn't do to badly. When it got scraggly looking, I just gave it a hair cut. I do like the idea of petunias. I do want to stay with shorter plants since the taller ones are in the middle of the bed. Marg

I always like alyssum on the edges. It will mound nicely and fall over the sides. Nasturtium is another favorite of mine and I have a couple of different light yellow and cream varieties. :)

Darn right - saponaria was the first thing that came to my mind reading this! LOL And if ANYONE ever gets it to cascade beautifully over a wall, i want to see pictures!

Alyssum is nice too, and i have lamium that falls over the edges of one bed, but it can get out of hand. I've also been loving lobelia for the past couple of years but have only used it in containers. So far!

Darn, too bad you're not close because I have a basement full of 'Big Daddy Blue' trailing petunias! Seems like every seed sprouted and they're starting to get big already.

With lobelia I find you can get away with full sun in a wet year, or until August in an average year in our climate. It really does not like dry heat.

Dianthus and phlox also come to mind. Small marigolds like the Lil Hero ones are nice too...Jean

Thanks for the great suggestions everyone. I have had allysum there before Ginny but it dried up and died. We get some good wind storms here and that area gets hit pretty good. I don't know if that's what caused the allysum to dry up or what. The lobelia did well and it was planted near the allysum. I have had soapwort at my other house and it was great. Never even thought of it here. I'll have to see if I can find plants or seeds. I did try wallflower (love the smell) but it doesn't survive the winters here. I love the idea of the blue petunias. Last year I ordered a pkg. of blue petunias but they all came up white. The bed houses mostly daylilies of mixed colors so I thought the blue would look nice with them. Marg
