If it was voles you should be able to find kind of slimy looking green piles of feces from them. Our yard was quite a mess two years ago, although not as bad as yours sounds. I did nothing I didn't do any other year as far as lawn maintenance, and our lawn recovered on it's own.

Did you check for damage on your trees and shrubs yet.? They also chewed my rose bushes and lilacs, but they also recovered just fine.

So far I haven't noticed any damage on shrubs or other plants. I am waiting to see if I get any tulips this year. I have read they like tulip bulbs. Lawn looks pretty bad. I guess we will have to reseed! Thanks for your comments

I don't think that you will have to reseed. Our lawn has always bounced back from the vole damage. There are enough deep grass roots that the voles don't get to. It looks bad now, but give it a little time to bounce back.

I have started eliminating a lot of the voles in the late fall and early winter. After most of the green vegetation (voles favorite food) is gone, I set out poison. The "Tom Cat" brand of mouse pellets works. I buy it in the size that is about a 1 gallon pail.

Regular, empty, tin cans that have the top cut off are used for the bait stations. I put about an ounce of Tom Cat in each can and then place the cans in the areas where voles hide. Slope the open in of the tin can slightly down hill. This keeps any rain or snow from making the pellets wet and mushy.

If there is a chance that other animals may get into these cans, you will have to restrict placement to areas like wood piles, thick brush, etc.

If you have a large area that is infested, loading 10 to 20 cans with poison, isn't too many. The time window when they will take the bait is small (late fall/early winter), because it is hard to do in deep snow, so be aggressive.

My vole problems, at 2 different locations, is almost gone now.
