I better take a peek at mine! There wasn't anything a week ago, but who knows? I know I have to get them watered this weekend. We've had some cold nights too - I'd just as soon they waited another week or so.

I agree, it is too early in my opinion, but what do I know? this is only the second year I have tried this method!
Do you think I should leave them "as is" or move them so they get less sun or ??

Yup, this is when we start seeing some tough sprouts. My records indicate April 3 from previous years....Congratulations DEB!

There's no need to check mine here - it's been cold for the most part and surely my seeds are smarter than that. Mine usually start sprouting around the 12th-14th, but i don't think they well this year.

Since you are close to me...when would you suggest starting annuals? I've never tried ws annuals last year, but I'm limited for space,etc in the house and thought I would try this method for them this year.

It all depends, which annual seeds do you have?

nothing exciting.
I presume sweet peas, snaps, pansies and sunflowers would be all right now.
But wondered if it was too early for zinnia's, stocks,salvia,rudbeckia, verbena, lavatera?

I would hold off on the Zinnias and Sunflowers right now, wait till around May 1st. The rest should be ok to ws now.

I have a friend at work who always has beautiful sweet peas. I asked her yesterday when to plant, and she tells me she usually puts them in the ground around April 7th, but she's behind this year. Deedee soaks her seeds in paper towel 3 days, then pops them in the ground. She says she still had some frozen spots last weekends, but is planning to plant them Monday or Tuesday next week. I'm going to give it a try, too.

Connie, i'd need a snowblower to find flower beds to plant in! LOL I think i'll just WS mine this weekend and plant them when i find some bare ground. :)

Marcia, I guess that's the advantage of living where decent snow cover is rare. We will most likely get a huge dump of snow later on when it's not convenient - Say the end of April, early May, or like last year, tailend of May. I got a nasty sunburn one year cutting the grass around the snowbanks on the May long weekend - I got up to go to work earlier that week, and went back to bed because my truck was very neatly buried in a large drift. Fortunately, sweet peas don't seem to be hurt much by snow once the ground is thawed out. They just keep growing until it melts again. My Grandma lived closer to Edmonton, where they do get snow. She used to plant her sweetpeas, peas, lettuce, and carros in the fall, and they'd sleep quite cosily until spring.

Yes, Connie, our snow cover is usually decent and we're fortunate for that. I'd love to plant stuff in the fall but the veg. garden never gets tilled in the fall, no matter how early i clean it out.

One thing i had to laugh at - when i opened my garden journal to April the other day, there was a note to myself to plant radishes in the asparagus bed. That would be a good idea if i could FIND the asparagus bed! LOL

I just checked my WS containers to make sure they weren't drying out in 'all this heat' we've been having (all one day of it...) and was surprised to see some Centaurea macrocephala (big head knapweed) seeds sprouted as well as some Iberis (perennial candytuft)! Yay! I think it might actually be spring!

Right on for seeing green! I see green coming up in my garden... but have yet to plant a seed this year yet 8^(

I have gone sunflower seed buying crazy this week though. I think I bought enough sunflower varieties to do the entire neighbourhood! 8^)

I've got sprouts in several WS containers too. It was so nice out today that i thought a lot would pop up, but it's the first day this week with no new sprouts. LOL Tomorrow!
