I'd suggest building a portable plastic greenhouse that you can put over the top of the tree when a particularly cold night is forecast (and then remove again as soon as the cold gets less severe)

wilt-pruf (a spray-on anti-dissicant used to keep christmas trees green) allegedly has some frost resistant qualities. stopping watering of your plants early in the fall to reduce frost tender new growth is another way of potentially minimizing winter damage.

Thank you, that is what I normaly do, but it doesn't really help from dec-feb. Temperature drops really really fast as the sun sets, no wind, 0% humidity, so almost everything with water freezes. However, root damage is not the concern.

I remember my uncle used to apply some sort of anti-dissicant in his apple orchard, I just wanted to make sure it is not harmful to conifers. I was reading about the wilt-pruf and it's mainly used in cherry and peach trees. On my pecan trees stopping watering has been very helpful reducing winter damage.
