I started Hosta from seed last year and planted them out into the garden. They wintered just fine.

I also started hosta from seed and wintered them over in the garden. I mulched them the first winter with leaves, and they all survived. They've all survived the second winter with no extra treatment and are doing well. Good luck with yours!

How long did it take for the hosta seed to germinate? I winter-sowed 3 different kinds and still no sprouts coming up. Is there something special to growing them that I don't know about?? Please fill me in.

Laurie, a possibility is that the seed must be absolutely viable. We're the seeds black?

I have no patience for starting hostas by seed, I buy them in gallon pots. ;)

Laurie, in addition to what Sharon said about viable seeds, they are warm germinators, so don't give up yet. They might just be waiting for warmer temps. I had started mine indoors on a heat mat. They were tiny the first year, and I was absolutely astounded when they survived their first winter. All mine seem to be plain green, but since I grew them, I'm now attached to them. LOL
I doubt I would grow them from seed again though.

Warm germinators, eh? I still have some seed left, maybe I should try some now and see how they do. Or is the seed not viable for very long? I just checked and the seeds are black.
Sharon, I hear ya about the gallon pots too!lol I have bought lots that way, but thought it would be a cool experiment to try and then I would have bragging rights when I discover a new wonderful variety that will be named after me!LOL Yes, I'll be holding my breath on that happening :o)

Laurie, I WSed some Hosta "Bressingham Blue" seeds that I got in a trade this winter. They just sprouted about two days ago. I wouldn't give up on them yet, I agree that they're probably just waiting for the warmer weather. Good luck!
