I haven't had much luck with lilac cuttings. I have started some by digging out suckers. It's about three years to flowers.

Ask the guys at Greenland Nursery. It may have to be done earlier in the spring. Going there tomorrow. Just live down the road and will ask and post

Thnaks for the tips. Much appreciated whatever you can find out Beegood. I have read that you have to wait for them to finish blooming to start roots. Too much energy going to flower development otherwise. This particular lilac doesn't appear to have suckers nor does the white one from my neighbours yard. Will stay posted.

Went to greenland today and Tim said if they were old regular Lilacs ( not a grafted one) you can take cuttings. Spring would be best but it can be done now. I presume they are the purple ones that every one had on their homesteads.

Thanks Beegood. I think they are just common lilacs that everyone had planted years ago in this neighbourhood. May have to overwinter them in pots in the garage or greenhouse (if I had one). I'll try it in the next couple of days and see where it gets me.

Someone please correct me if need be, as I may very well be wrong.

If I were to start a cutting, when winter came along, I'd bury it, pot and all, in some sheltered corner of the yard. I think in a garage could end up being too warm for it.

My Sensation Lilac that I potted up 2 years ago, even survived above ground this year set between two cedars.

The common lilacs are very familiar with harsh conditions out in the middle of nowhere on prairie farms =:)

If I were to leave them out all winter then I wouldn't be able to move them until spring. Not too sure whether I will be here next spring....that's why I want to make more lilacs. These are my mom's and have been here since the house was built in 1946. I don't want to take any chances of losing them. :)

Last summer I stuck two cuttings of the Korean (little leaf) lilac in a pot of soil,and just left them out over the winter. (we had good snow covering).
They are well rooted now.
