Looks like over water to me. Is your soil mix able to drain the water?
From my experience figs don't like sitting in water.
I always check the top of the soil by putting my finger in if its still damp then I don't water.(hope I am not telling something you already know)

By looking at the 1st picture, the fig trees were overwatered as there was plenty of water being drained out!

I was told by a fig grower who has 30+ fig trees that-"To kill a fig tree easily, just overwater it!"

Your potting mix looks very heavy and over watered as already stated. If your mix is holding too much water you'll wanted to get them out of that wet soil quick or the roots will soon rot.

In your zone it is too hot to grow in pot.
Roots are getting too hot.
Grow in ground and if you can't,then grow in the pot in pot method.
The potted plant is planted in the second larger pot with soil in between them to keep the roots cool.
And drill more drain holes.

If growing pot in pot paint the exterior pot,in white paint,and make sure both pots got good drainage.
Your plants will thank you!

Thanks for all the tips. I checked out the pot and it had some really terrible drainage...2 tiny holes only. I added a bunch more drainage and we will see how that does.

I think I am going to eventually yank this cherry tree I put in and stick the fig in the ground. I don't know what I was thinking with the cherry tree idea. I guess winter would be a good time to do this?
