remove all leaves and fig so all the energy goes towards root production and growth of the roots already attached. plant in moist soil and keep in shade or indoors. This will keep the suckers from drying out.

You should find out what variety the fig tree is, it is nice to know what type of fig to expect. Also you will have to learn about pruning, root pruning, bringing the potted tree into an unheated shelter for the winter so it won't freeze. You can look up previous threads on these topics on this website.
If it is a hardy variety like Hardy Chicago, it can be planted outdoors with winter protection even in zone 5, but you may want to wait until it is a few years old to do this when the tree is stronger.
I have potted fig trees in zone 5 and bring them into an unheated basement for the winter. Fig trees need 'chilling hours' and need to be cold but not freezing for awhile during the winter, and they should lose their leaves since they are decidious. When it looses it leaves in late fall, it doesn't mean it has died, only going dormant, and should grow new leaves in the spring.
