My hubby made me one years ago ;)

Right now I have 3 compost bins in the back yard which I made about 10 years ago out of old pallets but they are getting pretty rotten now so I think I'll replace two and use the barrel for a third. Did your husband make a barrel composter and if so how do your like it?

I had a barrel composter for a few years and i really liked it - it just wasn't big enough! Now i have the bins made with pallets, and those work quite a bit better for us.

It is small like Marcia states, so I used it for kitchen scraps and coffee grinds. If you turn every other day you can make compost very fast compared to bins.

This is a super old thread, but I'm just getting into the gardening and composting world. I was thinking of worm composting, but just reading these few comments, maybe I could do a barrel compost!

Welcome Amanda! We made a composter out of old wooden palettes. Also our town offers one plastic composter to every household for a discount.

I hear the barrel composters create compost quite quickly, although it is limited what they can hold.

So I decided to go with a barrel composter after all. My husband wasn't convinced (despite the many discussions) that worm composting smells fine. For anyone in Edmonton I just found out that the City has composting classes for about $10.
