Hansa is a very tough rose and i would definitely recommend it for a hedge. We moved ours this summer and it came through surprisingly well. It's a very prolific bloomer and has lots of hips.

That sounds like a nice hedge rose. How tall do they get? I have another area where a taller rugosa rose might be better.

Before i moved it, it was about 4 - 4 1/2 feet high, but much of its outer growth died back. It's kind of scraggly now, but it has survived and will bounce back next year, i'm sure. It was about as wide as it was tall. This is it last summer in July, and it bloomed even more later in the summer. Excuse the long grass - it was too wet to mow quite often last summer too!

The rose I would recommend is 'Dart's Dash', it will stay about 1m, has bloom on it all summer (more so if you dead head) and fantastic hips for the winter. Another is 'Will Alderman', the flowers less blowzy than 'Dart's Dash' and held above the bush better. But, alas I don't know where you can buy it. Then there is 'Polareis', mine is covered with bloom now and the flowers are much longer lasting than the other Rugosas which seems strange because the flowers are very delicate looking. It does not set hips and has the worst thorns of all my roses.

I 've growen Therese Bugnet and Hansa -both are good choices I'd also suggest Blanc Double de Coubert-double white, great smell great for a hedge.Jens Munk-double med. pink 3" across sometimes with white streaks great for hedge only PRICKLY.One I still love though not as hardy as the rest is Topaz Jewel The creamy butter yellow colour is worth it needs some protection where I live
