I saw a fig tree (also lemon and lime and some others) growing in a hydroponics shop near Philly today. The guy said it was a purple fig (unknown variety) and was three years old. For a three year old tree it was slightly larger and the trunk was a bit thicker than I expected. The top was lush but the leaves seemed to be suffering a little bit from being in the humid shop.

The tree was growing in one ofthese. The guy in the shop showed me the roots. The root mass was much smaller than I expected. I have trees with single year root growth greater than the hydroponic tree.

I have no desire to grow hydroponcially, but it can be done if anyone else does. ;)
