sweet potatoes/yams

I harvested my sweet potatoes (the orange ones) and got enough for a meal. A little over a half dozen, 3-4 inches long and an inch in diameter. I grew about 4 plants in a large pot in my unheated green house. The vines didn't get large and stayed within the confines of the pot. Although the daytime highs frequently hit 30C, overnight lows were frequently in the 10-15C range. I'll probably try again next year.

How big was your pot?

I assume a meal is less yield than you were hoping for. How disappointing.

Do you know how many a good yield would be?

I did the same when we lived interior AK. It was 'fun' and did get enough for a meal also. Maybe I should try them again.... :)

It was an experiment. A meal is good. Sweet potatoes are a hot weather plant. In the spring 10C visibly stressed the young plants. I'll try again next year and try to find a way to get them off to a better start.

Hi there, a layer (or two) of floating row cover may help your sweet potatoes by bumping up night temps. by 2-3 degrees. I love having a greenhouse in this climate. I was able to get a decent eggplant crop this year. Now I have kale, turnips and pak choi growing in there and I will put row cover on when the weather gets chilly.
