under construction

16 years ago

Was running a few lunchtime errands in Denver yesterday, and unexpectedly found myself driving past the botanic gardens.

Picea glauca 'Pendula' on street outside the gardens

{{gwi:625052}}

Pinus wallichiana, Himalayan pine

{{gwi:664456}}

Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Weep Willie', with lights

Picea glauca 'Pendula', looks like a leader is starting to develop

Thuja koraiensis, Korean arborvitae

Pinus tabuliformis, Chinese red pine

Larix sibirica 'Conica', Siberian larch, showing fall foliage

Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Dawn redwood, ready for winter

Sign of the pines

Cupressus arizonica, weeping, in conifer garden

It seems like over the past year the gardens have continually been under construction.

Pinus ponderosa dwarf

Picea pungens 'J. James'

Picea pungens 'Dove'

Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Weep Willie'

Those are the best photos I've seen yet. That's a lot of variance among species being shown.

Thanks brothaman,

"Pinus wallichiana, Himalayan pine"

Can't see that lasting long there! About 3 zones too cold for it.

"Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Weep Willie', with lights "

Talk of 'Charlie Brown' christmas trees, that one takes the biscuit ;-)

This rather big tree is suppossed to be Pinus wallichiana, Himalayan pine, at an arboretum in Zone 5 Ohio. So this tree has survived decades.
So is there an issue about which is the actual species?

Doesn't look like it - wrong shape crown (more like P. strobus), too green, needles too short, cones too small. As with other similar cases (e.g. Morton Arb.) I'd suspect it'll be Pinus à schwerinii. Can you get a close-up of some foliage and cones?

Noki, Did the foliage droop as it should for wallichiana? If you cannot get photos...

The one in Denver looks to be a few breaths away from being knocked over. It appears unhealthy, it appears to have been over-watered.

Thanks,

The P. wallichiana as shown in Denver B G looks very much like a plant wich I bought a couple of years ago as Pinus wallichiana 'Densa Hill', but wich was identified on this forum (I forget by whom) as P. strobus 'Fastigiata'.
Agree, the tree shown by Noki doesn't look at all like mature wallichiana that I have seen . T.

The tree in that picture does seem to be very similar to Pinus strobus, but the needles did seem more relaxed and kinda floppy looking. The cones were held out on the end of the branches different it seems. The picture was just taken.

A link to the Arboretum below (hopefully it works) listing what they have. I make no claims if they are correct or not.

Here is a link that might be useful: link
