Maybe I should ship ya my black lab to help out around there, Marcia. She'd go through triple pane windows trying to get that beast. Oh yeah, I can see it now.

I wouldn't mind seeing a deer in my yard from time to time. (I know, I wouldn't care for the damage either, but I'd love to watch quietly from the warmth & comfort of my house). They don't venture this way, even tho we're on the edge of town. Sometimes a skunk or racoon, often gophers of different types. Once we had a donkey wandering around (a pet from down the road got loose). Oh, and then there's the drunk neighbor brothers who stagger back and forth - I stamp my feet and yell if they stagger too far this-a-way.

I love seeing the deer too. But not quite in this situation! In the last picture is the cat's butt in the window. At least she was growling at the deer. The dog had a sleepover with my son last night so he wasn't around to scare it off. Then this afternoon, i found out how effective he wasn't! LOL Usually he barks his head off at deer. Don't know where his mind was this afternoon!

Ok, I see the deer, what about that snow though ????

Nice pictures. In the one where he's chewing the top of the lily it looks like he's trying to make up his mind as to whether or not he likes the taste of it.

It is nice to see wildlife. Although at times I'm sure you scream Marcia. And I have to say I love the look of snow. Everything looks so clean. (That's the only nice thing about it.)

It is nice to see the deer close up.......once in a while, but it sure doesn't take long to see how destructive they can be in a garden! Most mornings and evenings we can see a few deer about 150 yards in front of our house. They have a path that they follow through there. Sometimes they can linger for quite a while, but if the dog's paying attention, they cross over the field and into the next bush pretty quickly.

A couple of evenings ago, it was really cute to watch a fox "playing" with the dog. The fox would saunter up to the edge of the front lawn, and Sandy (our dog) would give chase for about 50 feet and then come back on the lawn. The fox would then come back for more, and so on and so on. Poor Sandy, after about 15 minutes of watching them, I got bored and went to do something else, but I bet it went on for quite a bit longer. She just doesn't allow any other animal on our property.
We're lucky to have her, I can't even imagine what my garden would look like with the amount of deer we have here. *shudder*

Yeah, we were the lucky ones, Laurie. You know, we were wishing for more moisture because of the drought - guess we got it, eh? LOL

A friend of my mother-in-law's insists that she saw our cat playing with a fox, but our cat doesn't tolerate most other dogs (i once saw her put the run on a German Shepherd), so i find that hard to believe. Another friend on Vancouver Island says his cat plays with deer. I really wish he'd videotape that!

You'd think a fox would eat a cat. (?!) My parents' cat, Spruce (thus my screen name) played with a field full of Canada Geese once. He started off thinking it was pretty fun but they closed in on him and he panicked and ran home.

Ooo, geese can be pretty mean! Spruce is pretty lucky he got out of there intact!

Yes, I'm sure an adult fox would make short work of a cat. Maybe it was a young fox Marcia? I know at my parents farm they've had fox kits grow up in a den at the end of their lane, and these young ones got pretty tame. Their cats seemed to get used to having these young foxes around and didn't pay much attention to them. Except when there was a litter of kittens in the picture. Then look out! One mother cat even took off after a bear when it got too close to the house.

For our old dog, Sandy, it wasn't much of a game. She was right ticked off that she couldn't catch this fox. And I'm sure the fox knew it..........that's what made the game so much fun! ;^)

Have some around all the time at the acreage, but hardly get to see them, since I don't leave there, all I see is the damage!

They didn't do too much damage, just nibbled on things. I just didn't want to give them a chance to do any more! For the past couple of days, i've seen them on our neighbour's back lawn as i drive by and i've stopped and told them quite sternly to stay where they were - the Deer Café is closed! :D

Marcia, spray a solution of 1 egg in 4 litres of water on any of the plants you don't want them to eat on. They do not like the protein smell given off by the egg. Sometimes this does not work in the winter because it seems that their noses are frozen or something, but the solution works great in the summer.

I need to wrap a few plants with burlap and string yet for winter protection just in case my border collie is sleeping when the pesky deer come a callin' in my yard.

Thanks, Brenda. I had heard of that egg spray but i'd forgotten about it. I'm sure someone here once recommended garlic and hot pepper in a spray - i remember joking that when dh shot the deer it would already be seasoned!

The snow has melted now. We've had a lot of rain today and that took care of the rest of it. The forecast is not great, though. It doesn't look as if we're going to have an Indian Summer unless it comes in November. (Our priest, Father Luigi, tells us it will be an Italian summer!)

AAAARRRGGGHHH!! Deer aren't very cute this year in my books! The sadistic thing is how methodical they are at eating the diiferent plant varieties. One day I'm looking at a beautiful late flush of bloom on my catmint plants...next day everyone of them is sheared off (Do they read your mind?) Another day the row of spinich was sheared off, next day the dill so on and so on. Its like they have their menus planned out for the week..tonite we have lovely fresh rose buds for dinner, but wait til Tuesday's Spinich special!
If you go out at night the yard is full of eyeballs staring at you...kinda creepy. We have three big dogs that have become incredibly immune to the deer. The other night when we drove into the drive way a deer and a dog came to meet us and we had to laugh because it looked like they were running together to greet the truck. Something is terribly wrong with that picture! Doesn't deer season open soon?
I got desperate and sheared all my perrenials that weren't shrubs just to keep the deer from damaging them. Seems to have worked. That egg solution sounds easy enough, will have to try it.
Actually there has been a crazy amount of deer population increase this fall around here, you really have to watch out driving. Not sure if they ran out of water up higher or it just has been an easy year or what. You see alot of twins too. Any one else having an increase in deer?
