Ugh!!!!!!!!! Oak Tree Pollen!

Yea, it's that time of year again. Everything covered in yellow pollen powder! The huge oak out back is keeping me busy with the broom on a daily basis, trying to keep up with all the "fuzzies" that are dropping.

The bigggest complaint I have however is that my 19 yr. old daughter suffers miserably with allergies this time of year and I'm hoping someone out there may have "a miracle cure" that we can try. She's a born and bred Floridian so I know it's not a change in the environment. We've tried every over the counter drug and prescriptions through our doctor and nothing seems to help with the symptoms.

I've read that honey that comes from a local source and taken in the morning has shown to help to a degree. Has anyone else heard of this remedy? How about herbs?

Any advise will be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks,

Sue.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any miracle cures. As I too suffer from major allergies this time of year I will be following this thread. What I do that at least makes life bearable this time of year: Flonase nasal spray (RX)1X/day EVERY day of the year, and saline spray during the day 2 - 3X/day. I just have to keep my gardening to a minium during the month of March and when I do go out in the yard for any extended time, I wear a painter's mask. I wish the best for your daughter.
I have 12 huge oaks in my yard which usually I love, but in March - I hate them!

i feel your pain! for years i lived in a neighboorhood filled with large oaks. this is the one time of year i hated, i always got sick. plus the whole neighborhood was covered in yellow, not good....lol! now i'm in a subdivision with few oaks. needless to say, i'm not sick. This is the one time of year i'm glad i'm in this subdivision. good luck!

PS: try and get out of the neighborhoood, as much as possible. this always helped me some...

I can relate. i'm on my third year of allergy shots and 2 nose sprays a day (nasonex & astelin) This time of year I walk around dizzy and stuffy regardless of the shots & meds. No cure but I suggest she use a nasal wash a couple times a day and look into the shots.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. We all wish there was some kind of miracle cure out there. Maybe someone will write and suggest something that we haven't yet tried. I feel so bad for those that suffer this time of year because it's such a wonderful season-bulbs are emerging, the sun isn't intense yet and it's the perfect time to be outside enjoying the fresh air. Until the pollen chases you right back inside. I guess until there's a "cure", those that suffer can either remain indoors or wear a mask-which at 19, my daughter would rather die.
Keep your responses coming...we're all standing by.
    Thanks,
    Sue.

On top of it, I had a cold all last week and it was just miserable. I also have three oak trees in my yard(not that big of a yard, either).

I use loratadine, which takes a few days to take effect but it seems to be helping me, though I get this congestion in my chest at night(something new) and coughing and so tonight I am trying the Zyrtec for the first time.

I usually also get wheezing, so I have to use an inhaler, but so far, not out here in Florida(only been here three summers, so could develop it later!wonderful...).

Interestingly, I had allergies as a child and teenager, then it disappeared in my 20s and early 30s,and started up again in my mid-30s!!!

A few things to remember.... Don't hang her clothes or linens outside.. keep the windows and doors closed or wipe the sills and screens every day .... I use a allergy drop for my eyes (expensive - Zatador) and Claritin on my bad days...... and know that you can get through it....... Much luck, Rosie

I'm new, but I suffer this time of year too. Besides the above suggestions, a neti pot with a dash of salt really helps me. I still have to take my Astelin, but if I neti after working out in the yard, I've found it really helps.

I agree with Cathy . A Neti pot has made ALL the world of difference to my 26 year old son who is allergic to everything on the face of the earth . After seeing Dr. Oz on Oprah , he ordered a Neti pot on the internet and now swears by it . He also uses Singulair , Rhinocort and Zyrtec and those drugs help a great deal. Our family motto is " Better living through modern pharmocology " . Plus keeping windows and doors closed at all times really helps . I keep a dehumidifier runing 24/7 as well as Hepa air filters running at all times . As we plant more trees and flowers around our country , Florida is no longer the only state with March pollen problems . Even Nevada and Arizona now have troubles .

My 13 year old and I almost die every starting in late January with the pine pollen, and now with the oak pollen. We have been through Claritin and Allegra, Allegra doesn't work at all. Claritin is supposed to be 24 hour but only works about 10 hours for me and not at all for my daughter. We both have to take supplemental Benadryl at night, at 10pm and again at 3am. In the morning I take straight Phenylephrine with Claritin. I took allergy shots for years as a child and teenager, but that was for things we had in Texas, not things we have here in FL. I have to carry a Proventil inhaler at this time of year as well.

We are trying Zyrtec now to see if it helps any more than the other stuff.

It we get a lot of rain it will help get the pollen season over sooner. I can only hope.

The pollen we get (yellow) dust every Feb.is not from the Oak trees but rather from the pine tree's, don't know about your's but here it comes from pine tree's.

Hi, my daughter and son suffer from oak pollen as well, my daughter got much relief from acupuncture treatments. She started going 1x a week at the beginning of feb. And has done great! -much better than my son who has been on benadryl, and zyrtec. We also do all the hepa filters, closed house, nightly showers, nasal rinses, and we have tried local honey. Hope this is helpful!
