zone 10 amaryllis question

is it all right to move amaryllis plants at this time of year in Fla.? although I've had them in a southern location I think they are getting to much shade from the house . They've been there for the last few years & I've gotten very few blooms & little multiplication except for the ones in the front of the bed.Never had the time to let it bother me before...too busy, but now that I'm no longer working I'm really looking forward to getting into my gardening full time. I've kept an eye on this forum for years & I can't begin to tell you how much help you've been. My name is Davie I live in s.w. cape coral & am into the "cottage" garden, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me on a regular basis....thanks for any help you can give re: Amaryllis, I know there is a forum just for them but I've found that zone 10 is really so much different.

About moving amaryllis: I have read that amaryllis HATE being moved and may take years to recover. I moved 2 years ago, dug up and took my prized amaryllis with me. They haven't bloomed since.

Are you watering them? They really shouldn't be watered. They need to dry out, even lose all of their leaves and die back, to set blooms. I don't think they like to be mulched, either.

If they are under the eaves of your house, they may be getting too much morning dew run-off from the
roof. I don't even have to water the orchids that hang just under the eaves - they get dew every morning.

If you do move them, you might want to wait until the "cold " dry wheather starts again next year. Also, it may reduce the transplant shock to actually let the bulbs dry out first before you replant them around March sometime- they'll know that it's spring.

hope they bloom this April!

Hi Iam zone 10 also my amaryllis is in full sun with 4 blooms on it now I would move it if no stalk or blooms.

Amaryllis make great cut flowers. The only thing that is a must---is to change the water everyday. They also like some afternoon shade, even in zone 9 where I live. I grow at least a dozen varieties just so I can cut the flowers off to put in a vase to enjoy in my kitchen.

They also hate being planted too deep. Their shoulders need to be right at the soil level.

I moved from zone 9 in Florida to zone 10 this summer and brought 3 of my amaryllis with me and planted them in a nice sunny spot and they have thrived! As a matter of fact they bloomed profusely this January and 1 plant is still blooming. The plants themselves are getting huge and crowding some my other flowers.

Mine are spectacular. I'm in Sarasota and have mine in full sun. Rarely get watered or any care yet bloom their heads off each year.

I wish the blooms lasted longer. I'm trying to add bulbs which bloom at various times.

The ones I moved this winter didn't bloom this year, and some are of blooming size, but they weren't blooming anyway. I'm going to put some blood and bone meal around them to see if that will help. If not, I'll put them into a container and let them get rootbound. That always seems to get them to bloom.
