question about ploidy i.d.

I have several new daylilies of which I know nothing of their parentage; To i.d. the ploidy within a clump of a single variety I have treated some fans as DIps and some as Tets and used pollen from Daylilies I already know the ploidy.... however both sets of fans are setting seed. In fact on all the daylilies I am trying to i.d. they are setting pods on both the fans treated as Dips and those treated as Tets. Will I have to wait to see if the seed are fertile or is there another way to check for ploidy (remembering I am just a backyard gardener and cannot check DNA) Could I check the pollen with a hobby microscope like you can find at the hobby stores (i.e. inexpensive)? Any ideas? or do I just have to try to remain patient and wait til next year for the seeds to germinate or not germinate as the case may be?
