Fig tree fruit problem

I live in southeast georgia,I had a fig tree growing in a large container, but it only grew about 3 ft high and produced leaves but no fruit. I finnally removed it and i happened to have in the rear of my yard a sink hole where i was filling with grass cuttings and any of the wast from the garden. So i threw in the fig tree which i no longer wanted. The tree was about 3 years old. The following year i saw shoots comming up, so i let them grow, this was 3 years ago. Now th tree is about 7 1/2 ft high by that much wide. The sink hole was next to a storm drain. The tree is covered with figs which grow to about 2 1/2 inches across, but the problem is that they are splitting open, and the skin is hard and the inside is not getting as ripe and sweet as it should. I dont know the name of the fruit, but the colors get a whiteish light tan. Can anyone help with this problem?
