Select Seeds

I followed my own advice and bought seeds for next year.

I just got the sale seeds, so missed getting any globe amaranth. I think I covered everything else though!

Cosmos, Giant Tetra Trianon

Flax Blue Dress (I want to try these with the new iris bed - that I still haven't got planted yet).

Broken Colors Four O'Clocks

Scarlet King larkspur (never seen a red one)

Medallian Daisy (aka melampodium) Showstar

Three different morning glories (for the front ditch)

Prairie Glow rudbeckia

Mexican Sunflower Torch

White Sweet Rocket (have the purple one)

Sweet William (Biennial...had before and love it)

Benary's Giant Scarlet zinnia

I cut several from the list....refuse to spend $40 on annual flower seeds, although many of these will self-seed for me,including the zinnias.

As long as I have had one plant of flax, this is the first year it self-seeded, actually it was in the cistern planter by the back door, so don't think the wind blew it there.

    Sounds pretty!

I just ordered my Dutch iris and allium bulbs yesterday.

I am wanting alliums too, but have an order of other bulbs coming and don't want to have to dig so many holes!

OMG, no one show this thread to my DH. Refuse to spend $40 on annual seed. :O I can't even go there. ;)

gldno1..You know I am joking with you. Your garden will be very pretty when everything blooms. Seed sales are the best....just remember that some seed won't keep well or will have lower germination if its not dated the same year you plant it. I didn't know there was a red larkspur. I'll have to look for that one.

Sierra, I will seal them up in a baggie and store in the frig.
I have done some seeds this way before, but not all these. Time will tell......

T&M had some 'red' larkspur, too, that I ordered. It'll be interesting to see just how red they are.

T&M says on their website that it is time to direct sow papaver rhoeas in zones 8-10 -- not in this zone 8! Too hot and dry to sow anything.

It's been raining steadily all day. If I had done some direct sowing today, I think I'd already have seedlings tomorrow! Some monarda that I planted a few days ago has already tripled in size.

I got the carmine red/pink larkspur, too. Since I use the carmine colors with purples and violets, those are the colors that I got.

Glad to hear that folks order from T&M since I'm allowing their ads on my blog. I ordered my seeds from Diane's and Swallowtail Gardens. I guess I should try T&M since I don't have all the seeds that want! LOL

Hmmm, maybe we should have an ongoing thread about which seeds keep well in storage or for a few years and which don't.

I ordered from T&M last year with a friend. Our order took over a month to get here. I was not impressed. I was also not impressed with the way they handled the order. And although I ordered a lot of unusual seeds, I wasn't happy with the germination rates. Many of the seed acted like it was old, really old seed. Plus the shipping rates to Canada were rediculous. I won't order from them again. If I see some seeds on a local seed rack from them, I still might consider them......but know I am taking a risk with them germinating or not.

Sierra, I quit Park Seed and T & M because of poor germination. A friend with a greenhouse said they had quit Park too, same reason.

I did order some seed from park last year and the rate was so so.

I will definitely keep track. I have been doing a Gardening Journal this year and am enjoying it immensely. I will try to put all details there. I have already used the journal to see when I planted certain things and when they were ready to harvest. It is nothing fancy, just a steno notebook that I keep right by my computer. First thing in the morning (usually between 3 AM and 5 AM) I enter the date and temperature.

Then when I come in, I list what I have done. I think it is making me more productive knowing I will be actually writing down the tasks.
At my age, I need something to keep me going!

BTW, our car (a 1990 Pontiac that I love) is rear wheel drive and I would take it over the 4WD truck any day in bad driving conditions.
