Rock Wall Update - 2 Pics

Since things seem to be a little slow around here, I thought it would be a good time to follow up on my rock wall project. In May I posted a request for planting ideas and put in this pic of the wall.

A lot of you sent me some very nice replies with great ideas, but sadly, I can't remember who and I can't access that post anymore, as it has disappeared forever. This is what triggered my rant in the conversations section a few weeks ago about the very poor archiving here at iVillage. (There! Another dig!)

Thanks to some seeds and Wal-Mart fifty-cent perennials, I at least have a green and blooming area now, although I haven't yet implemented some of your ideas, most of which are lost now anyway. :(

Here's what it looked like two weeks ago:

The sunflower plant on the left was a bird feeder volunteer.

I do remember that one of you asked me to show you what it looked like when I was done, so now you know. It's a start anyway. As always, next year will be better. Thanks again to all who helped. Further suggestions would still be very welcome. :)

I love the vines!
I sure wish they would stay green year round.
I think that's what is going to make winter the worst for me. I'm going to feel so exposed when the vines die back.
Everything will be so naked!

Your rock wall looks great. Thanks for sharing your pic.

I love your rock wall. The first plant that came to mind when I saw it was thrift.

Here is a link that might be useful: Thrift

Wow, that really turned out well, Thinman.
The sunflowers add a perfect spot of color too.
Very nice! Thanks for showing us the results.

What are the vines? Annuals or perennials?
It looks great!

T'man...

I'm so glad you posted the "after". I love the way the vine softens the side of your deck. If you do a mirror image of your deck/wall it will be very similar to what we're going to build next summer. It's nice to have a visual. DH works much better that way.

And please welcome my DS and DDIL to your lovely state. (snif) They just moved to GR and are so excited about new jobs, brand new house, and 1/2 hour from the lake. They also love to garden. Fortunately they're in the same zone as I am so we can seed swap with them.

Haziemoon - Yup, winter is going to make this all look pretty homely. Luckily, it's in the rear of the house and I won't be out there much, except to grab an occasional armful of firewood for the fireplace.

Gurley157fs - I followed your thrift link and I really like that plant. It should work in my zone and looks great. I wonder why I don't see more about it. Maybe I'm just poorly informed. :)

Patti - Thanks. I like the sunflowers there, too. How nice of them to pick that spot to grow.

NancyjeanMc - The vines are just annual morning glories. You can just make out the small blooms here and there if you look closely. I'm really hoping to have some clematis there next year, maybe Sweet Autumn (I think I have the name right).

Georgeanne - I'm with your DH. I really like to have something to actually look at in order to build things. I have messed up so many times just trying to wing it, that I now force myself to carefully draw and dimension everything before I start sawing or digging. With plantings and rock walls, if you mess up it's easy and cheap to undo and redo. I hope your DS and DDIL like Michigan. GR has some very nice areas.

Thanks to all for your comments.
