Why does Live Oaks in New Jersey stay at the top of this list, when the posting is nearly 4 months old with NO responses? I am so sick of looking at it.

why is this message still near the top of the list when no one has responded?

How do we get rid of this annoying message that no one wants to address?

Q. virginiana is foliage hardy to around zero and wood hardy to subzero, although I don't know the limit. This is assuming a more northern seed source. Mine has been slow-growing, but hardy. Q. myrsinifolia survived -6 here in 1994 with no damage, as did Lithocarpus henryi. Keep in mind wind is a worse enemy than cold.

steve, how is your myrsinifolia growing? i have 2 in my garden both small 2 yr olds. also added a pair of quercus gilvas this spring. anyone know about gilva?

I my have the only Quercia Virginiana in New Jersey. I brought up a small (3 inches) seedling from Hilton Head Island about 5 years ago and, placing it in larger pots over time, wintered it over in my Florida room. It is now over 7 feet tall and in the ground for 2 years. I have a covered cage around it in the colder months and provide enough heat to keep the ground from freezing. I use the old C9 Christmas lights. So far, it is working beautifully. The tree is healthy and beautiful. It hasn't put down acorns yet but I expect it will in the next couple of years. I have 2 Q. virginiana and the closely related Q. fusiformis; escarpment live oak. Both virginianas are about 8'; Q. fusiformis a little less. One of the 2 virginiana had leafburn and 12-18' dieback during the second of the 2 cold winters. It recovered the lost growth the next summer. Q. rugosa has been hardy here for several winters, as has Q. risophylla X Q. canbyi (dieback to mulch first winter). However, 3 virginianas in a nearby park died from wind desiccation.
