Heliotrope

At a nursery once I smelled a wonderful heliotrope, just beautiful and intense, but alas, not for sale. I've been trying ever since to get one like that.

Last summer I bought a Heliotrope from Logee's. It's purple, and a nice fragrance, tho not really intense. It thrived, bloomed constantly all summer and fall. In the winter, it survived very well, so this spring, I bought some more, this time from Select Seeds. I got one of each, and they all have buds but no big flowers yet except for the white one. The white isn't a sharp, brilliant white, more like palest lavender, but it is nicely fragrant, a little stronger than the ne from Logee's. I still have hopes for the rest :)

Anyone growing this who has a really wonderful one? Also does anyone know how to make cuttings of it?

    Hi mehitabel,

The most fragrant I've grown in 'Fragrant Delight' which I know is pretty common. I too have tried Select Seeds white variety (and their 'Old Fashioned' as well). The white was nice but it didn't blow me away. I must say I am tempted by their latest offering, 'Sweet Heaven'. Heliotropes just tend to look ratty and burned out in our midwest heat though. They like cooler, more temperate zones.

Good luck finding a really intensely scented one!

Thanks, Robert. :) I guess they do get a little ratty from time to time, but I just pinch and chop them back a lot when they get too sorry looking. They do seem to need lots of water here.

Sweet Heaven is one of the ones I got. It is just barely opening buds, so not much fragrance yet. I also find they are more fragrant in the morning than later in the day. If I find one that's intensely fragrant, I'll certainly broadcast it :D

I just picked up a Simply Scentsational Heliotrope (Proven Winners) as an impulse buy at a local nursery. I figured the name said it all, right? Course when I got home and looked it up online (no open flowers at the nursery) they describe the fragrance as 'light'. :(
Oh, well. Hopefully the butterflies and hummers will like it!
The flower pix looks pretty and interesting at least.

Hi, Robert. Yes, it's frustrating with the dazzling names and the "light" scent. The buds they came with are starting to open, but so far no wonderful scents.

I suppose it's another of those flowers that has lost its scent from careless breeding. OTOH, my nose is elderly and not the best :D

I also boguth a 'Sweet Heaven'. Heliotrope recently that could not take heat much and looked burnt out. I have a southfacing patio/deck that get lot of sun and it could not take the sun/heat. It does have some vanilla fragrance but not that strong.

Thanks for the replies, kandhi and kemistry. Yes, mine seem to have only faint scents, and only sometimes. However, my nose is not the best any more.

Kandhi, mine are in full sun. I do find the old leaves get pretty ugly--ragged and burnt-looking. But I pinch them off, and that gives the little shoots underneath more light. With pinching, the new growth comes in a lot tighter and prettier.

    The bees like them :)
