I had creeping red in a wooded shady area as a fire break for years. It's great grass, personally my favorite for what little grass I grow. Fine blade, dark green, grows in awful soil. I never amended the soil, very poor drainage, the works, just threw out seed. I planted other fescues in the sunny spots and they weren't nearly as nice or healthy. Yes it will do well in the shade, mine got maybe 4-6 hours filtered, I never (ever) watered it and it was fine. In early early spring I'd randomly toss lime on it, which it did like, but that's all the attention it got. Whatever you do, don't fertilize it. Seriously. Hates to be fertilized. Had a friend with a lawn service show up one day while I was gone and kindly apply that liquid in a truck stuff (what is that anyway???) and it killed the entire lawn within days. He thought he was doing me a favor, poor man. Mine was not a high traffic area so I don't know how it handles wear.

If you sod - not that you can seed now anyway - please take care to check and make sure the grower has not used that foul netting they sometimes hold sod together with. In some cases it is made out of a nylon and can haunt you in a few years. Birds and animals can get caught in it - pretty sad to see.
