There are some battery powered edgers on the market now if a regular electric one wouldn't be feasible for you. I know a long extension cord is a pain, but if your driveway, etc aren't too far from a recepticle, electric might be the way to go.

Thanks, Agnes. I didn't know there are electric edgers. That would be good for me. Both the carport and the front porch have outlets. I think I'll run down to HD tomorrow and take a look.

One of our neighbor friends purchased a battery powered(rechargeable) lawnmower that has a detachable (or retractable) edger with a steel blade that cuts almost anything, except stone or concrete. It converts from mower to edger with the flip of a switch on the handle. She ordered it from an ad in one of the gardening magazines and the cost was comparable to one of the noisy, air polluting, hand crank, gasoline engine models. I assembled it for her a few years ago, but sorry to say, I don't remember the brand. If you're interested, Google will probably turn up several. Her's has been trouble free, but check reviews before making any purchase.
