Can't say its totally dummy proof, but make certain you get enough soil when dividing the plants and trim the roots with shears before replanting. I always use manure or compost when transplanting and a handful of bone meal to stimulate root growth. Everyone has a different procedure, but the main things is when replanting make certain when you backfill, mixed exiting soil with amended products that the soil is tamped down, end of spade or whatever to avoid air pockets and water thoroughly.

Oh you cannot hurt those things. Just digging them up and plopping them in would be all they need - soil amendment is not needed. Once you dig them up, you can see where you might need to divide them - I've divided them with a shovel! Not sure if bullthistle meant to trim the ROOTS with shears, but I trim the foliage back to a couple inches and let them resprout anew.

Definitely this is one of those things that brings success almost no matter what you do - a real confidence booster.

It's fairly easy. At this time of year, they probably don't have a lot of leaves. I do trim the roots because they can get long and it's easier to plant them trimmed.

When you have a big clump, I usually let it dry out a little then just bang it with a shovel or trowel to separate. Be careful not to just pull off leaves, you want to separate at the base/bulb. If you have a really thick clump, you can just cut with a shovel or knife or pruners.

You really can't kill these things. Plant as much as you have, they will sprout.

I started out with 3 of one type 5 years ago. I now have over 300 of that of that one type. I gave away a bunch last year.

As far as soil goes, I would try to break up the spot where you want to plant them. I usually add some new miracle gro soil or some type of slow release fertilizer.
