Part shade between tree and house

I've got a big flowering cherry whose trunk is about 15ft out from my house. There are short hollies in front of the house, and a big empty space in between. This area gets a blast of sun early in the morning and late in the day when the sun is low, and shade the rest of the day.

What could I plant here that would cope with the hot sun, full shade, and tree roots? I would like for it to look nice, or at least tidy, year round because it is in the front of the house. It is a fairly formal design, so no wildflowers or grasses. Thanks!
