I am vegetable gardening myself. I have raised beds, but I divided them into 1' blocks and planted each block intensively with a different item. This is in my front yard, so I wanted it to look pretty.
Don't know much about peas other than it is too late to plant. They get planted here in either January or February depending on the "type". I honestly do not know more than this!
As for marigolds, the most successful are the smallest little ones. The others get way too tall and floppy. I love Scarlet Starlet, the Sparky Mix (often found at discount stores), any of the single diablos, naughty marietta, and best of all is Tiger Eye or Solan (same plant, two different names) flowers all summer long, right into fall!
I am learning we can grow leaf vegetables in the hot weather months if we choose to grow plants from climates with hot/humid conditions - for example thai vegetables. They grow vegetables for different seasons so you can choose their summer veg and have excellent success. There are several places to find thai, japanese and chinese vegetable seeds like

It takes some searching, but you can eventually find the "key" words that will let you know what plants will grow best, and when here.

Tomatoes: Look for the wording - "crack resistant", "heat tollerant", "sets fruit in heat", "weather resistant" those can get you through dry or wet weather, and you will have fruiting in hot weather (many cherry tomatoes will also set fruit in hot weather). Heirloom tomatoes do very well here.

Stems: green stems are better in cold weather, white stems are better in warm weather. "Heat Resistant" or "tropical climates" is something to look for when choosing Asian vegetables.

You can also begin going to local growers or community growers and see what they grow. Community gardens, church plant sales etc. usually grow some for customers, and plant some. They will grow what they are successful with in their own gardens!
