Clematis a no show

Okay--I'm no Master Gardener but have been digging and planting for many years. I've lost plants naturally---but---this Spring my 'unkillable' 'unstoppable' 'rampant' sweet Autumn clematis did not leaf out!!!Grew like crazy last summer from the previous fall planting- and bloomed respectably for a 1st year vine. This spring-NOTHING!! Not any sign of life at all-wood feeling dead and brittle down to the ground. What the heck could have killed this vine?? Strangely-in a planting bed-raised and with soil ammended-my honeysuckle vine Flamegold has put out 1 skinny leader vine with a flower on the end. Was a very robust plant last year. Anyone have any clue as to what might kill these stoic vines!!? Could chipmunks do it? Did find what appears to be a rodent hole in the raised honeysuckle vine bed--and have seen chipmunks. If so--what do I do?
