That is so strange but beautiful. I like to know what others think is happening.

Haven't a clue, GP...is that the first time it has done it? Very interesting!

Two things come to mind. It could very well be a sucker from the root it was grafted onto. If it is fortuniana then it would be he Cherokee rose, which has white flowers once a year. I'm not sure what the other root systems would throw up.

It could also be a sport, which is a new rose on a branch that unexpectedly comes about by mutation--very accidental and rare, but they do happen.

Below is Malcom Manner's explanation of a rose sport.

If it is a sport it would be very cool because it is new kind of rose. You could get a cutting and have it named after you.

Here is a link that might be useful: rose sport

tom--they're grafted usually on 'double cherokee' or fortunaina. the double-cherokee might or might not be related to the cherokee... fortuniana blooms are slightly doubled with bright yellow center.

gp--this time of the year, roses do all kinds of strange things because of the sudden heat, drought, deluge, whatever. all my roses are much fuller and deeper in color now than later in the spring/summer. anyway, my guess is your bloom there is just 'malformed'--in a pretty way.

I don't think they are grafted on fortuniana , they are
David Austin Roses. I did get on his site and found one called GRACE that has similar petals but a peachier color. They have been happily blooming off and on in my garden for about 4 years now.

I had this same thing happen several years ago! It happened on the first flush of Teasing Georgia as well as on several other varieties. I asked the advice of the local ARS and no one had any idea. I think it was a freak thing caused by weather or some other condition. The next flush of blooms was fine and it hasn't happened again since. I still have pictures.

Thanks you wouldnt believe the spam I got from this post.Guess they thought Georgia Rose was a girlie name and Teasing was, well you get the idea.
