they only grow covered - window can be an issue because they can get overheated there. There 2 variegated ones that are potentially growing without cover if the humidity is high -= Pink Smoke and Cleopatra Canadian clone. Pink Smoke grows on the light shelf for me on a wick and mat with humidity about 50% in a basement in a plant room. I saw gorgeous Cleopatra CC in Florida - but humidity there is high. try Pink Smoke - it is the toughest of them.
