Frankly, I haven't paid much attention to these, once the blooms fade, which they already have on mine. Had they produced a fairly large quanity of drupes, I'm sure I would have noticed, as they are located near a large clump of Viburnun cassinoides, which I have planned for years to move, as they receive too much shade.
Don't know if fragrance would have insured pollination this year, as the bees were in hibernation (or died) during the freeze. I am still seeing very few around. Maybe the swarm of European Honeybees that attacked my large clump of Georgia Asters last fall will decide to return. Gardeners have to be eternal optimists!
If the saying is true, that you learn from your failures, then I should be receiving a grand education!

One cluster is open on each of my two trees today. I put my nose into the flowers, and there is a smell but not one that I'd call "fragrant". They are not unpleasant, just not fragrant.

At least I now know that I don't have a couple of oddball trees.
Maybe some of the Styrax species have fragrant flowers and someone assumed that all members of the Genus were alike in that respect and other writers just copied that in their description. As I mentioned, Dirr did not include that in his description, but it is found in the Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas (Radford, Ahles & Bell) and others from here and abroad, such as Allan Coombes' "Trees" (Brit). Oh, well....live and learn.
