That would be O.K. if you have all the pumpkins on it you want. Is this a giant-type pumpkin, or a smaller carving type?
You may also be able to turn the vine in another direction, to keep it going. If you do this, do so on a warm afternoon, when the vine is more flexible. Take it easy, and make sure no tendrils or roots are attached to the ground or weeds.

It is a regular carving pumpkin plant. I don't have any pumpkins yet but have some flowers. I already made a u-turn, and it has over doubled that size. Could I train it on to a short chain link fence?

It should be no problem for it to climb a fence. A pumpkin plant has both male and female flowers. The pumpkins form under the females. The males start opening a couple of weeks ahead of the females. You can tell the females by the small round ovary under the flower.
