End of April in as large of pot as you can find. We use gallon size landscape pots. Then as soon as the 1st true leave is formed its out in to the hoophouses. You don't want the Tap root to bottom out.

a suggestion.. as I use gallon pots to transplant poppies (which are 'supposed' to be nearly impossible to transplant) is to use a squatty and wide plastic landscapeing flower pot.. maybe even a 2-3 gallon one...the 'ribbed' black or green kind. Cut the bottom completely off and tape it back on with masking tape. Fill it with rich soil. When the pumpkin plant has it's first 'true' leaves, pull the masking tape off and remove the bottom and plant it all... pot and all. This give no root disturbance and you can concentrate water and fertilizer downward. Plus the roots will be deeper, as they have to go deeper than the flower pot to spread.
