You can obtain the necessary information and materials for collecting soil samples from your County Extension Agent's office.

Once you have the samples, return them to the Agent's office and they send those to the testing lab at UGA.
There is a small charge for conducting the tests.

It's important to tell them what you plan to grow, so that specific recommendations can be provided for addition of chemicals and nutrients at the proper application rate.

For quick results, you can make a PH test yourself.
There an inexpensive electronic device, for about $11.00 (sold at hhme depot, pikes, ... where seeds are sold. battery not included !!!) that can check your soil PH pretty good. It also can check general nutrient level in the soil.

You have to follow the instruction carefully, as to how to prepare samples and test and practice several times.
A booklet also comes with it that list PH preference of most garden veggie, flowers, trees. But for the beginner it can be confusing. Because you practically cannot provide exact PH requiremen for each vegetable or flower in your garden.

For majority (I would say more than 90%) of garden veggies and flowers , a PH range of 5.4 to 6.8 will do, 6.5 being the ball park figure. The only vegatable that I have found as an exceptions is potato.
Then how many people grow potatoes???

Remember, that you CANNOT change the PH level of your garden soil overnight. So it has to be done gradually.
Most soils around here are slightly acidic, especially in wooded areas. Tree roots, leaves, natural composts are generally have low Ph(more acidic). to correct this you would need garden lime. BUT BUT do not expect to get immediate results. You will learn soon.
On the otherhand, it is easier to make soil more acidic by simply adding organic matter, compost,..
