I wouldn't advise it, definitely not with medium and larger varieties. You really have to keep a consistent moisture level with tomatoes or problems will quickly occur. 30 minutes of inadequate moisture can cause blossom end rot and when it gets hot you will be watering those containers constantly unless you have some sort of drip irrigation. I use a self watering container from Gardeners.com, it's called the tomato success kit. It has been wonderful.

Every time I've tried to plant in containers (non-self watering), I've netted less than 10-12 maters over the course of the year.

Too much effort, too little output.
