well you tell us. How much water have you been giving it?

Weeelll, of course I don't actually know. It is on our drip irrigation system with two small sprinkler heads that go off twice a week for 20 minutes each. My husband would probably know the actual flow rates but he wont be home to ask until quite late

That's not even close to enough water. How big is the tree?

7-8' tall. The root ball when removed from the burlap was disturbingly small for the size and price of the tree.

Here are some things to consider. Is the soil well-draining? Did you plant at the proper depth? I think this is a plant that needs the "moist, well-drained" soil. If I were you, I think I might dig a little and find out if the root ball is dry or not. If not, (which I suspect) put a hose right at the base of the tree, and water slowly to allow the water to thoroughly soak the roots. How long? Oh maybe 15 minutes or longer, twice a week. You see what happens is if the surrounding soil is drier it will wick moisture away from the mass of roots, until they have grown out into the soil. I have seen more deodars die from lack of water than too much, especially if they have good drainage. Also, make sure you have a nice organic mulch like shredded tree bark under the tree to conserve moisture. I hope it makes it!

It sounds like not enough water. The plant needs a good dousing 4 times per week during this summer (which won't see any rain, by the way).
