Sun requirement for wave petunias

I live in Atlanta and would like to plant some wave petunias along my front walkway. I get dappled sun all day with a few hours of direct sun starting around 5:00 pm. I planted regular petunias there last year with some success... although they ended up dying because I didn't water them enough.

The standard suggestion for waves is that they need 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day but I assume that's a general guideline and don't print directions for each region of the country. 5-6 hours of Atlanta sun is different than 5-6 hours of New York sun. I've grown healthy tomato plants in 3 hours of afternoon sun where they were in the shade the rest of the day.

Does anyone have experience growing wave petunias in similar conditions and if so, what kind of success did you have? Any thoughts / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
