It is both, a wild strawberry (Fragaria Virginiana) and a weed!
Commonly found in disturbed areas, lawns, gardens, roadsides, etc., where the seed have been dispersed by birds.

It's a vining plant and produces runners, that will cover the ground and penetrate surrounding areas.
Unless you want an eternal plant, best to remove it now!

It looks to me more like duchesnea indica (Indian strawberry). Duchesnea has solitary yellow flowers and unpalatable fruit. Fragaria virginiana has larger leaves, a compound inflorescence of white flowers, and small tasty strawberries.

I rather like duchesnea as a groundcover, at least in some spots. It's evergreen. The yellow flowers and red fruit are of some interest. To some, it's a weed.

and i'll forwarn you, each berry has a bajillion seeds, and if one hits the ground, be prepared to be pulling them out for years to come.

they're so tiny that you'll be hard pressed to get a good meal out of them such as a normal strawberry.

I have recently found these in my front flower beds and the fruit has no taste. I suspected that they were a wild type plant, since I could not recall putting anything there. I guess I better get busy and start pulling them up. UGH...

Agree, it likes moist, partial shady areas. We never see it out in the open and is much less persistent than grass or mint in the garden beds. I'd rather have the birds eat them than "our" strawberries.
