It's an Alpinia ginger. Don't think it's edible. Your description of the smell of the crushed leaves leads me to Alpinia Nutans, or Alpinia Calcarata and your bloom looks similar to both although I would pick Nutans of those two. Your description of the vigorous growth habit also indicates Nutans. It's been around in the trade for years but there are so many Alpinias out there, it's really hard to say.
