What are the conditions of the embankment? Exposure, sun or shade, dry or damp? Are you going for something for looks or to hold the slope?
There are a few books that are great for gardeners in Georgia, I like "The Southern Gardeners Book of Lists", any of the books by the Hastings or by Erica Glasener.

We need ground cover to hold the slope. Most of the embankment is in a sunny location. The far end is in shade. The embankment is dry.

Will anyone be walking on this? Do you want low to the ground or can it be a little taller? Daylilies work well if you don't need to walk in the area. Otherwise there is a whole group of plants referred to as stepables that could work. Sedum work very well on sunny dry slopes, as does hardy iceplant.

There really isn't any reason you can't do a beautiful perennial bed on a slope (depending on it's angle)and how strong your back is. There are many good plants that will do well in that situation, lavender (spanish is the only lavender I've been able to grow here),sedums,daylilies,grasses. and yes roses. You can even mix in some sun loving shrubs or smaller trees.

What is currently growing on the slope?

The slope is steep and right now our hope is to prevent further erosion (there is a french drain and some erosion has taken place)and find the best plants for the area. The cabin is in Blue Ridge. There aren't many plants on the slope... mostly shrub-like with some weed-like growth. The home was a summer residence only. It doesn't appear any ground cover was planted previously.

We will not be walking on the slope. It faces west and runs along our driveway. We would like a low-growing ground cover and something that is not attractive to snakes. :)

Look around your neighborhood for other ground covers you like.
It really depends on how much maintenance you want. The number one low growing ground cover is juniper.

I have several and procumbens has the fewest weeds and makes the tightest knit cover. Blue chip is the prettiest but does get a few weeds. Shore is attractive, cheap and also tightly knit but not as much as procumbens. They all have a slighly different look but are all low growing junipers. I have never seen a snake in my ground cover junipers. I have other ground covers that are attractive to snakes though.

I would avoid the slighly bigger ground cover junipers like parsoni because they do look snakey and they get more weeds.
