Me thinks that the 1st Japanese Brocade is correct as the last one looks like Vintage Wine.

Well Jan, I don't Have my pics loaded onto the photobucket yet but tomorrow I am picking up some Amber Sunset. I don't collect Munsons but there are some I really like. I won Desert Jewell on the LA this spring but she rotted and went to the place where all beautiful deceased dls go...LOL!!...Ellie

Ellie....I also won DJ on the LA, and it rotted for me too...one of the few that did. Do you think maybe it's just subceptible to rot? I've heard that certain dl's are.

You all have some beautiful Munsons! Juliet, your photo of China Veil is outstanding! I have that one, but for some reason it didn't bloom this year. I can't remember which photos I've already posted here, so I'll just post some of my favorites.

COURT MAGICIAN is my all-time favorite Munson.

CHINESE WATERCOLOR is an Ida Munson cultivar that captivates me.

THAIS had a very blue-looking eyezone the day I took this photo.

SHISHEDO looked like it was on steroids this year. The color has never been so intense.

NIJINSKY was a new for me, and I love its shade of purple.

Debra...love your Munsons. Thais is a new one for me this season, and it gave me my first bloom this week also. It's eye doesn't look blue like yours however.

So far, out of all the new Munson's I purchased this year, I've had two that were the wrong ones when they bloomed. One was supposed to be Japanese Brocade and the other Enchanted Empress. The blooms on both of these imposters were yellow. The seller offered me a refund but I asked them to wait till next bloom season and make sure to send me the correct ones, of which they agreed to do. :)
Keep those Munson's coming folk, I'm loving them.

Jan - Your Thais is lovely. The eye on mine isn't that blue in real life. There was something about the light that morning that made it look bluer than usual. Here's how it looked when I got it last year.

I have scapes on Court Magician, Highland Lord, and Respighi. With Collector's Choice and Silver Veil, that makes only 6 that I have. Ever since the very first Munson thread I saw here (maybe it was started by Rick?), I've been wanting all of them! I've never seen Thais before - it is lovely!

Desert Jewel lived for the 1st time ever for me this year but I planted it last fall. Whenever I buy Munsons that have tended to rot before, I try again in the fall. This year it was successful for DJ and Enchanted Empress. Sari is still a lost cause for me though. That will to wait until I move to TN.

Jean: Munsons are unique as they are normally very hardy from the South into the north and alot of them have beautiful watermarks & branching is superb. Alot of the newer watermarked daylilies being hybridized today have Munsons in the Bloodline. The potential of more greatness in crossing these daylilies with others is still relatively untouched though. Munsons are getting harder and harder to find.

Jan & Shive.. I really believe Munson was getting close to Blue when he became ill. Plants like Thais and Douglas Lycett just to name 2 is very evident of that. Those are notes I wish I had!!! LOL

Jean...I'm glad you are enjoying our Munsons. I think dayliliesrus, answered your question as to why lots of us collect Munsons.

Rick..lol...lots of these are new for me and if there are some I haven't already sent you, just keep a list and I'll send them your way when they increase for me...ok??? Just don't lose my wish list either!!!!! ;o)

Dayliliesrus....thanks for your input about DJ...I hope I can get it once again and have it survive and grow for me. Enchanted Empress was one of the "imposters" I got but hopefully I'll get the real EE next year. I also think you're right about Bill being close to blue with his dl's and your not the only one who wishes for his notes!! :) I have already started using lots of his cultivars with the newer cultivars because I totally agree that the possibilities of using Munson dl's in hybridizing is for from being used to it's fullest extent.

Didn't mean to leave you out...lol...your Benchmark photo is gorgeous. It was one of my very first Munson's too. Looks like your off to a good start with yours. Silver Veil was another of my first ones and still one of my favorites.

I've noticed how hard it is to get good pictures of Munsons (or at least, my Munsons). They seem to have a problem opening sometimes, or the petals "canoe" (Brooke's term), or the color just doesn't photograph well. So I appreciate all these great photos!

I'm really enjoying seeing the vivid reds and corals - I didn't realize he had so many.

Re Desert Jewel - mine has not succumbed to rot, but hasn't thrived either. I planted it last fall, it was small and sickly this spring, but did produce one scape with 4-5 flowers. This was probably the best of the bunch.

I have really injoyed this post.so many beautiful daylilies to see.Love them all,and Thank you for answering my question as to why every one seems to want these Munson's.If thats the case that they are more hardy,then I will want to get some too,when I can. A cash flow problem now,to pay some medical bills.

Hi! At the risk of being completely embarassed, I'm going to ask anyway...what is a "Munson"? That is, what distinguishes them from other daylilies? I started collecting Lilies this year and love looking at this forum and the pictures. Educate me please. Thanks in advance!

Vela: See my post above re: Munsons. Munson was a famous hybridizer who really failed to get major recognition until after his death around the year 2000. His daylilies and hybridizing efforts are the basis of many of the new cutting edge daylilies that have all the wonderful watermarks and eyes. He also had a flair for the simple elegant look in some daylilies such as Lilac Snow shown above. With that being said, a large group of people like myself and several others on here started collecting his daylilies before they are lost forever. Some of us are using them in our own hybridizing efforts as the incredible gene pool he created has been barely been touched.

I have been looking at some catalogs from Daylily Discounters that another poster so generously sent me so I can scan them.. Some are lost forever such as Roadmaster I am afraid. I am about to start scanning them now that I can breathe again (Daylilies are winding down and my son is all graduated from High School) so I can get them back to her. I will post a link to my PictureTrail Account when completed once I figure out what to scan and post there. The earlier Daylily Discounters catalogs mixed them in with others so I will need to be selective as I do not have much more room on that account!! LOL

dayliliesrus, I can't wait to see your project. I've not heard of Roadmaster, but there sure seem to be a lot that are nearly impossible to find. (But I bet you have them growing in your garden, don't you?)

Max.. I have a few :-) however I have also lost a few..:-(. Some are not that easy to grow for me unfortunately. I cannot grow Cameroons, Sari and several of the others no matter when I plant them. I will have to count on those when I move to TN I hope as it is not quite as humid there as here in SC. Court Magician has also been difficult for me in the past and it is such a lovely thing. I planted it in the fall and so far it is hanging on. It gets afternoon shade where it is now. I did notice I have lost Chateauraux & Silver Screen this year also. Franklin Edward League did not even bloom this year.

I know they're not difficult to find, but let me know if you want those three after you move -- I'm sure I'll have some to spare.

Max you may just have a trade in the works!! I am sure we will begin building in a year or sooner. I will probably be back and forth for several years as my DH does not retire for another 2 1/2 yrs. I will be thrilled just to get those to grow in a new yard.. It would be like getting one of the rarest of Munsons for me!! LOL!!!

Wow! These are the most bee-you-ti-ful blooms! Seems like everytime I see a daylily online that I really love it's either a Munson or a Moldovan. Benchmark has been #1 on my wishlist - now it'll be followed by China Veil and Russian Rhapsody and ....
