Take the whole thing out of the pot. Examine the crown closely to be certain the whole thing is sound and healthy. If it is, just cut it in half with a sharp knife or saw. Go ahead and plant the halves.

If some of the crown is dead, cut divisions excluding the dead section, and plant them.

Thank you! i thought of sawing in half. some websites said there were tubers some said roots. i'm quite sure the soil in the pot is as tired as the poor dumosa!! thanks again.

You'll find rhizomes and roots in the pot. It would probably be a good idea to rinse off as much of the old potting mix as possible. Not only is it likely to be spent, but it'll give you a better look at the crown and root system. You'll also probably find the rhizomes and roots are pretty heavily circled in there. Straighten them out as much as you can before replanting the divisions.
