I have found that the birdseed sprouts through whatever you plant, so I like just mulching that spot so you can just hoe them out. I would be interested if anyone has found something that works.

Hi Robyn,

I completely agree with Kathy. In my experience birdseed will come up in and through anything planted below the feeder. Also, ground feeding birds feeding under the feeder will eventually destroy the grass or whatever else is planted there. Here at my new house I want to put a couple feeders right in the middle of the grass where I can easily see them from inside, so I'm planning to dig out the sod and put in a patch of flagstone or patio stones that are level with the grass so I can mow over the top of them. To hang the feeders I plan to sink a pipe socket into the ground in the middle of the patio stones so I can easily insert a pole with a T or cross on top to hang the feeders from. Ground feeding birds will have easy access to the spilled seed, I'll be able to sweep up the leftovers, and I'll be able to lift the pole out when I cut the grass. Now I just need to wait until my injured elbow improves and I have the time and energy to do it! In the meantime I have 3 birdbaths and a big pot saucer full of bread crumbs and cubes out, so I get to watch the birds anyway.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck,
Skybird
